Let’s set the scene. It is 2:00 PM on a Saturday in LA. I am standing in my kitchen, staring out the window at my backyard.
And it is… raining.
In Los Angeles, the weather usually oscillates between “Perfect” and “On Fire,” so when the sky actually opens up, the city collectively malfunctions. My husband, Brad, is looking at the weather app like it has personally offended him. My daughters, Madeline (10) and Charlotte (7), are asking if this means soccer is canceled (yes) and if that means they can play Roblox all day (no).
We are all looking out the window, wondering if the 405 will simply cease to exist under the weight of a quarter-inch of water.
For most Angelenos, this weather is a nuisance. But for dog owners, it triggers a very specific urge: The need to escape.
Whether we are fleeing the blistering 100-degree heat of the Valley in August or chasing “actual” sweater weather in November, the concept of the “Coolcation” has become our family’s survival mechanism. It’s about fleeing the city for higher altitudes or coastal breezes where the air is crisp, the pavement isn’t hot enough to fry an egg (or a paw), and the vibe is decidedly slower.
But here is the catch: You can’t just leave your furry best friend behind. You need a getaway that doesn’t just tolerate your dog but welcomes them—without sacrificing the high thread count sheets and room service you deserve.
After extensive research and a recent verified trip, here is my ultimate guide to luxury, dog-friendly getaways within driving distance of LA.
1. The Verified Review: Getaway Big Bear (Running Springs)
Status: Visited (October 2025) The Vibe: Minimalist Zen-Master Distance from LA: ~2 to 2.5 hours (depending on the 210 traffic)
You have likely seen the ads on your Instagram feed: a tiny, matte-black cabin with one giant, perfect square window looking out onto a serene, wooded landscape. It looks like the set of a sci-fi movie about really stylish hermits.
Last month, Brad and I decided we needed a hard reset. We packed the girls and our Goldendoodle, Barnaby, into the car and headed up the mountain to Running Springs to see if it lived up to the hype.
The Experience
Getaway has taken the concept of “camping” and filtered it through a lens of millennial efficiency.
- The Cabin: It is small. I’m not going to lie to you. If you are claustrophobic, check the square footage first. But it is designed like a puzzle; everything has a place. We had a queen bunk bed setup next to a massive window. Waking up to a wall of green pine trees instead of a stucco wall was worth the price of admission alone.
- The Digital Detox: This was the kicker. They provide a cell phone lockbox. I dared the family to use it. Brad hesitated, looking at his iPhone like a lifeline, but we did it. We locked the phones away for 24 hours. The result? The girls played cards for three hours. Brad read a physical book. We cooked chili on the two-burner stove while staring at the rain. It was a total system reboot.
The Canine Report (Barnaby’s Take)
Getaway is aggressively pet-friendly. They don’t just “allow” your dog; they seem genuinely disappointed if you don’t bring one.
- The Welcome Kit: Upon arrival, we found two bowls, a placemat, and a bag of artisan treats waiting for us.
- The Leash Rule: They ask that you keep dogs on a long lead outside to protect the local wildlife (and your dog—there are coyotes in these hills). We used a 30-foot lead so Barnaby could patrol the perimeter.
- Barnaby’s Verdict: “Five stars. I sniffed a tree that was frankly enormous. I successfully ‘guarded’ the family from a squirrel that was, in my professional opinion, ‘too close’ to the fire pit. I have never been more appreciated.”
Know Before You Go: The floors are a sleek laminate. They look great, but they are slippery for furry paws. If your dog is older or has hip issues, bring a few yoga mats or rugs to lay down so they don’t slide around like Bambi on ice.
2. Ojai Valley Inn (Ojai)
Status: Top of the 2026 Wishlist The Vibe: The “I’m Not-So-Secretly a Celebrity” Escape Distance from LA: ~1.5 hours
If you want to trade the cabin life for a white robe and spa water, this is the spot. Ojai is famous for its “Pink Moment” sunsets and a mandatory zen-like state that instantly lowers your blood pressure.
Why It’s On The List
While it’s not always “cold” (Ojai gets hot in the summer), it offers a cooling of the soul.
- The Luxury: I have been reading about their spa for years. The property is a sprawling 220 acres of Spanish-Colonial architecture, oak trees, and golf courses. Brad is pushing for this one for the golf; I am pushing for it for the “Kuyam” mud treatment.
- The Dog Program: I called their concierge to ask about dogs, and they told me about their legendary pet program. Apparently, for a fee, your dog gets a plush bed, a special pet menu, and—get this—access to a private, resort-guests-only dog park. Not a public park, but an exclusive run for the doodles of the elite.
The Drive: Take the 101 to Highway 33. The drive up the 33 into the valley is stunning, winding through hills that turn lush green after the rains.
3. El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel (Santa Barbara)
Status: Saving Up For This (It’s a splurge!) The Vibe: Old Hollywood Coastal Glamour Distance from LA: ~1 hour 45 minutes
This is the most literal “coolcation” on the list. When it is 105°F in the San Fernando Valley, it is usually a foggy, breezy 68°F in Santa Barbara. The marine layer is nature’s air conditioner, and El Encanto is its most luxurious waiting room.
Why It’s On The List
- The Bungalow Setup: Unlike a standard hotel where you have to drag your dog through a lobby and an elevator to go pee at 6 AM, El Encanto offers individual bungalows and cottages. You have your own front door leading out to lush gardens.
- The Location: It sits high in the Riviera hills, offering sweeping ocean views. It feels removed from the chaos of State Street, but you are only a 5-minute Uber from the “Funk Zone” (for wine tasting) or the Santa Barbara Mission (great lawns for sniffing).
- The “Barnaby Factor”: Belmond properties are known for telepathic service. My plan? Order a $26 spritz on the terrace, watch the fog roll in, and pretend I am a wealthy widow in a mystery novel while Barnaby naps under the table.
Know Before You Go: Check the weight limits. Many luxury hotels cap dogs at 40lbs. If you have a Great Dane, you might need to call ahead for a waiver.
4. Idyllwild Inn (Idyllwild)
Status: Wishlist (Planning for Snow Season) The Vibe: Authentic Mountain Town (No Chains Allowed) Distance from LA: ~2 hours
Idyllwild is LA’s funky, wonderful, high-elevation cousin. It sits at over 5,000 feet, making it a perfect winter escape for snow play.
Why It’s On The List
- The Mayor: I am not making this up—the Mayor of Idyllwild is a Golden Retriever named Max. There are no fast-food chains and no stoplights, but there is a dog Mayor. That tells you everything you need to know about the culture here.
- The Accommodation: The Idyllwild Inn has been the heart of the town since 1926. We are looking at their “Theme Rooms” or rustic cabins. They aren’t ultra-luxury in the “marble bathroom” sense, but they are luxury in the “fireplace and knotty pine” sense.
- Walkability: The best part about the Inn is the location. You can park your car and never touch it again. You are steps from the Idyllwild Brewpub and the Honey Bun Bakery.
The Drive Warning: The road up to Idyllwild is windy. If your dog (or your children) gets motion sickness, prepare accordingly. We keep the windows cracked for fresh air and drive slow.
5. The “Savvy Researcher” Option: Pine Mountain Club
Status: Zillow Stalking The Vibe: The “A-Frame in the Woods” Fantasy Distance from LA: ~1.5 hours (North on the 5)
Want to go really off-the-grid? Drive 90 minutes north on the 5 to Pine Mountain Club. Located in the Los Padres National Forest, this is a private community that many Angelenos forget exists.
Why It’s On The List
I haven’t booked a specific house yet because I am waiting for the perfect one on Airbnb/VRBO, but here is my strategy.
- The Fenced Yard: In a hotel, you are tethered to the dog. In a rental home, if you find one with a fenced yard, you achieve the Holy Grail of pet travel: The morning coffee release. You can open the sliding door, let the dog out to sniff the mountain air, and stay inside in your pajamas.
- The Value: You can often find a massive A-frame cabin here for half the price of a hotel room in Santa Barbara. It’s quiet, there are bears (so check the trash rules!), and the cell service is spotty. Perfect for disconnecting.
The Ultimate “Canine Coolcation” Packing List
We learned the hard way that “Pet Friendly” doesn’t always mean “Pet Equipped.” Even if a hotel promises a bed and bowls, we always pack our Doggy Go-Bag:
- The 30ft Long Lead: Essential for places like Getaway or unfenced cabins. It gives them the illusion of freedom while keeping them safe from coyotes or traffic.
- Musher’s Secret (Paw Balm): Whether it is hot asphalt or freezing snow, dog paws are sensitive. We apply this wax before hikes to protect Barnaby’s feet.
- High-Value Treats: New environments can be stressful. We bring “the good stuff” (freeze-dried liver or cheese) to bribe him into settling down in a strange room.
- A Sheet from Home: We throw an old sheet over the hotel furniture. Even if dogs are allowed on the bed, it’s polite to minimize the fur we leave behind for housekeeping.
- Collapsible Bowls: For the car ride. Hydration is key, especially at higher altitudes.
A Note on Winter Safety
If you are heading to Big Bear, Idyllwild, or Pine Mountain Club in the winter, do not let the LA sunshine fool you.
- Carry Chains: Even if you have an SUV. The CHP (California Highway Patrol) will turn you around at the base of the mountain if it is snowing and you don’t have chains in your car.
- Check the Weather: Mountain weather changes fast. That light rain in Santa Monica could be a blizzard at 7,000 feet.
Conclusion: Just Go
This summer, when the asphalt starts to shimmer and your dog looks at you like you’ve personally betrayed him with the heat, don’t just suffer. And right now, when the rain is confusing us all? Pack a bag.
You don’t have to fly to Alaska. You just have to get on the 10, the 101, or the 5. A world of crisp air, pine trees, and happy, pant-free pups is just a few hours away.
We’ve done the cabin life, and we loved it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go refresh the Ojai Valley Inn booking page and manifest a cancellation.
