Some restaurants you go to for the food. Some you go to for the view. Carbon Beach Club Malibu, the little restaurant tucked inside the Malibu Beach Inn, is one of the rare ones where you go for the feeling — the feeling that you’ve somehow left your regular life behind and landed in the middle of a mini vacation, even though you’re only a drive down PCH from home.
We came here two weeks ago, on July 3rd, to pre-celebrate my husband Brad’s birthday (his actual birthday is the 4th). Since we both happened to have that Friday off work, it was the easiest thing in the world to point the car toward Malibu and go somewhere that felt nice, relaxing, and a little bit special.
It was the three of us — me, Brad, and our daughter Madeline. Meanwhile, Charlotte was off at a sleepover, a detail that becomes important later. Honestly, this isn’t our first time here, either; in fact, we’ve been many times, and it’s earned a permanent spot on our short list of “let’s go somewhere that feels like an escape” places. So here are all the reasons we keep coming back.
1. Carbon Beach Club Malibu Makes You Feel Like You’re on a Mini Vacation
Ultimately, this is the whole magic of Carbon Beach Club Malibu. It sits right on the water inside the Malibu Beach Inn — a super tiny little inn in Malibu — and the moment you settle in, your shoulders drop. You’re a short drive down PCH from home, but it feels like you’ve checked into a getaway. That “I’m on vacation” feeling is exactly why we return again and again, and it’s the number one reason I’d send anyone here.
2. The Oceanfront Terrace at Carbon Beach Club Malibu Is Unbeatable
So when you come, sit outside. The outdoor terrace is the entire reason to be here. All you see is ocean and the shoreline of the coast stretching out in front of you. We like to dine around 5:30 p.m. — you want it to still be light out so you can actually enjoy the view, and if you time it right, dinner before sunset out on that terrace is about as good as it gets.
Out there you hear the ocean waves, the seagulls, and the low hum of other diners chatting nearby. What’s funny is that it doesn’t actually smell like ocean, which is oddly nice. It does get chilly once the sun starts dropping, but they have tall outdoor heaters, so you’ll stay comfortable.

3. The Whipped Ricotta Is the Starter to Get
Overall, the food here is good — genuinely good — and it starts with the Whipped Ricotta, which I’d absolutely recommend. My one honest gripe: it doesn’t come with nearly enough bread. And if you ask for more, they charge you $4 for four extra pieces — which is really just two pieces cut in half. A small thing, but worth knowing going in.

4. There’s Something for Everyone (Including the Kids)
This is a spot where the whole family eats well. Madeline ordered the kids’ chicken tenders, and the portion was big — a good problem to have when you’ve got a hungry kid.

I had the farfalle with pistachio pesto, and it was very good. Fair warning: it’s on the heavier side, so I couldn’t finish mine. (No regrets.)

Meanwhile, Brad ordered the NY strip, and it was solid. There was a ribeye on the menu too, but it was ridiculously expensive, so he went with the strip — and honestly it was a great call. I tried a bite, Madeline tried a bite, and it held up.

5. The Deep-Dish Chocolate Chip Cookie Is the Star
Of course, now for the best part of the night. For dessert we had their deep-dish chocolate chip cookie, and it was great. There is genuinely nothing better than a warm chocolate chip cookie with ice cream while you’re sitting there listening to the ocean.
Two important tips: you have to order it in advance — it takes about 15 minutes to make — so tell your server early. We spotted it on the menu the second we sat down and called our shot immediately.
Since it was Brad’s birthday, they brought it out with a candle in it. The only catch? It gets super windy out on that terrace, so lighting the candle turned into a bit of a comedy — it’s always a challenge to keep a flame going out there. Still, worth it.
And here’s the part I promised would come back around: when Charlotte later saw the photo of that chocolate chip cookie skillet, she immediately regretted the sleepover. As a result, she’ll be the reason we come back — she’s already made it clear we’re returning just for this dessert.

6. Carbon Beach Club Malibu Feels Special Without Being Stuffy (Just Know the Basics)
Carbon Beach Club is intimate and special, but easygoing — and a few practical things make the night go smoothly. First, this restaurant is tiny. Super duper small. So you absolutely need a reservation, because there simply aren’t many tables.
Second, when you pull into the Malibu Beach Inn, valet your car. I know it’s tempting to hunt for parking, but PCH is genuinely dangerous and it’s not worth it. Instead, hand over your keys and start your evening the relaxed way. Finally, you’ll see a small check-in area on your left for hotel guests and the entrance on your right; then walk in, and the restaurant is right there.
I also want to be honest, because that’s the only kind of review worth reading: our server was very nice (I’m sorry to say I don’t remember his name), but service was a bit slow. We had to ask a couple of times for more bread for the whipped ricotta, and it didn’t actually arrive until we’d already finished our main courses — I think they simply forgot. That was our only real disappointment of the evening, and in the grand scheme of a beautiful dinner by the water, it was minor.
7. The View Is Worth Every Penny — and You’ll Want to Come Back
Dinner ran us a little over $200 for the three of us — that’s one kids’ entrée, two adult entrées, the appetizer, and dessert, including tip. Sure, is it pricey? Yes. But you’re paying for that killer view, and it is truly beautiful. To me that’s the honest math: at Carbon Beach Club Malibu you’re not just buying dinner, you’re buying the feeling of being on a mini vacation twenty minutes from home.
So, would we go back to Carbon Beach Club Malibu? Without question — many more times. If you’re looking for a relaxing, special dinner in Malibu — a birthday, an anniversary, or just a Friday you managed to steal back for yourself — make a reservation, request the terrace, come before sunset, and please order the cookie early. Your future self (and anyone who skipped the trip) will thank you.
